St Wilfrid's RC Middle School
So Close for St. Wilfrids
St. Wilfrids arrived at the annual girls football tournament with confidence – we had been practising after school for 6 weeks and we felt we had gelled as a team.
We made an excellent start to the tournament by winning 3-2, thanks to 2 goals from Georgia Lyall and 1 from Dominique Hepple. However, our next game was against a really good Guide Post team who just scraped a win, beating us 1-0. Even though, we pulled ourselves together and won the next game 4-0, 1 goal from Lydia Barrass, 1 from Emily Price and another 2 from Georgia Lyall.
This meant that it all depended on the last match, against last year’s champions Meadowdale. In the first few minutes, Lydia Barrass was through on goal when she felt she was pulled over. “PENALTY” shouted the team, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be as a late, late goal by Meadowdale gave them the win.
In the end it was a very enjoyable day and, seeing as we came 3rd, also quite successful. I would like to say thanks to the referees, organisers and Mr. Mole for bringing this tournament together as girls football is a very fun sport that isn’t really advertised enough.

ST WILFRID’S NEW YOUNG LEADERS
Unlucky 13 for St.Wilfrids!
On Thursday 23rd September St. Wilfrids played their very first league match – against Cramlington away. The team for this match was;
GK- Charlotte McAndrew
GD- Chloe Stevenson
WD- Amber Sogorski/Anna Parker/Chloe Cullen
C - Emily Price/Katelyn Wright
WA- Meg McBurnie/Chloe Cullen
GA- Lydia Barrass
GS- Katelyn Wright/Emily Price
After a shaky first quarter, a great team talk by Mrs. Swinburne and some repositioning, we came back strong in the second quarter and we managed to pull back a goal or two.
As the game went on, the way the team played as a whole got better and better. In fact at one point in the last quarter we were only one goal behind!
In the end Cramlington were just too good and went on to beat us by two goals to win 13-11. However, considering that a few of Cramlington’s players go to County Netball Satellite Academy, we did extremely well. The Cramlington team awarded Katelyn Wright Player of our Team for her brilliant performance as Centre.
We hope to build on this experience and have some success in our next game against Guide Post.

Hello everyone!
On Thursday 24th June the Year 7 Young Leaders attended their very first event – the Year 4 county tennis finals. It was amazing!!!
Eight of us were umpires and the rest concentrated on tennis skills. In the morning the girl competitors did matches and the boys did tennis skills then they swapped in the afternoon. We were all really nervous and excited before it began but once we got into the swing of things we relaxed and had some fun!!!It really helped that many of the children there played for tennis clubs, and were experts themselves, so they helped us sometimes!!!
At the end of the day, a little presentation was held and Tynedale won. The organiser in charge mentioned that the Young Leaders had performed really well and all the children gave us a massive round of applause. We were all very proud!!!
But of course this was all too good to be true, so on the way home our bus didn’t start!!! It didn’t matter though it didn’t ruin a great day!!!

After being picked by Mrs.Swinburne and Mr.Mole, St.Wilfrids have a brand new group of brilliant young leaders!!!They are; Anna, Chloe, Jessica, Kathryn, Megan A, Megan W, Rhegan, Emily, Caitlin, Amber, Connor, Robert and William and ourselves. We were selected to become Young Leaders after writing an application which explained why we thought that we would be good leaders.Together we have attended three training sessions. During these sessions we have learned about the qualities of a good young leader, the importance of the job, role play and we have even invented our own game!!! On Wednesday 26th of May this training was put into good use as we all went to St.Andrews to help out with the Quad kids there. It was a fantastic morning and we all had great fun!!!
Our Young Leaders course has become part of the “Sky Living for Sport” project which is run by Sky Sports. We not only get a T-shirt but we can follow our progress on the Living for Sport web-site. Part of the project also involves us having a “sports mentor”. Our mentor is Katy Storie who is an England rugby player. She came into school and we spent an afternoon with her which was excellent. She talked about her career and how she has progressed to play for England at rugby and how much hard work she had to put in to achieve this. We then went outside to do some team-building games which were great fun. She will keep in touch with us to see how we are developing.
We are soon to be involved in a tennis course run by the LTA. After this course we hope to be going to the County tennis finals in Jesmond to officiate in the Year 4 tennis finals.
This is all great practice for us and will help us to develop into great leaders. Next year we hope to help out in lots of school events, Sports Partnership events and also run a weekly sports club at St Andrew’s First School.
